11 things you should never ask anyone who lives or works in Earl's Court

Publish date: 2024-05-31

For some people Earl's Court is just the gateway from central London to Wimbledon , precariously perched between Zones 1 and 2.

Many believe it has no defining characteristics, especially now the famous Exhibition Centre has been demolished.

However, anyone who lives or works there knows this is not true.

Read these responses to 11 things you thought you knew about Earl's Court and next time you are heading along the District line you might be tempted to jump off and hang around for a while.

1. Why is the air so dirty?

You may have read somewhere that Earl's Court has the worst air pollution in London but don't blame us, it's the number of people passing through that cause the fumes, we just have to live with it.

2. Wasn't Earl's Court the first Tube station to get an escalator?

I don't think anyone has ever actually asked this, but yes it was! Escalators were installed in 1911.

3. Is it possible to sleep with so much traffic at all hours?

Everywhere in London is busy. Move to a farm if you want some peace and quiet.

4. I couldn't live so close to a cemetery

Brompton Cemetery is beautiful and mysterious. If you don't mind the gravestones you should come to the coffee shop there sometime.

5. I heard the Metro Bank is the largest in London

I'm not sure if it is the largest but I do know that all Metro Banks can be found on corners and if you want to see a huge one, come to the corner of Earl's Court and Cromwell Roads.

6. Do you miss the exhibition centre?

It's certainly had an interesting history. It hosted a fascist rally in 1939 and Bombay Bicycle Club played the farewell gig so it has offered a little bit of everything throughout the years.

7. Ok, so it's been knocked down, when is the redevelopment going to be finished?

Please don't ask. It is a very sore subject.

8. Is there anything else to do there other than switch your District line train?

Yes there is plenty. You can also switch onto the Piccadilly line . And if you decide you actually want to leave the station, there are plenty of pubs and restaurants, including the Troubadour which is a great live music venue once graced by Jimi Hendrix.

9. What is Jollibee and have you ever been to it?

It's a Filipino fast food restaurant and arguably the most popular location in London. The queues are regularly snaking around the corner and if you have a spare moment you should swing by and try their famous spaghetti and sausage dish.

10. Do you live in the posh area or the rundown area?

Isn't this true for everywhere in London? Earl's Court can feel like a bit of crossroads but it's the diversity that makes it great.

11. Didn't Freddie Mercury used to live there?

Yes, 1 Logan Place is the address, but we don't want to boast.
