NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Alphabeat 'Don't Know What's Cool Anymore' Album Review

Publish date: 2024-04-16

SOUND THE ‘NEW MUSIC’ ALARM as after a 6 year absence from the charts, pop powerhouse super group Alphabeat are officially BACK with the release of their brand new studio album Don’t Know What’s Cool Anymore, out TODAY!

Featuring the singles Shadows and I Don’t Know What’s Cool Anymore, the record is a non-stop, popular musical masterpiece packed full of intelligent, well-crafted and well-produced perfect pop hits!

Progressive and current, yet respectful and staying true to the classic sound that made them oh-so successful over 10 (!) years ago, the album is an exhilarating ride through the lives and minds of Anders SG, Stine Bramsen, Anders B, Rasmus Nagel, Anders Reinholdt and Troels Hansen – as they continue to push boundaries and broaden the pop landscape across the LP’s 9 tracks with their unique mix of euphoric dance/pop anthems and gentle, heartwarming ballads.

‘Same song, slightly new format’

Lyrically more introspective this time around, the band have definitely grown as artists, musicians and maybe more importantly, as individuals during their time apart, exploring more personal and prevalent themes on songs like I’d Rather Die – a 1960’s folk style protest song, denouncing the state of the world in 2019, and Sometimes – an uplifting, unifying, coming together track detailing the process of finding personal balance after experiencing life changing levels of success.

However, the change in lyrical content does not mean the band have ditched their infamous carefree, crowd pleasing power pop anthems all together, as tracks Goldmine and lead single Shadows are sure to please and excite die hard Alphabeat fans old and new.

CelebMix Picks: Our favourite tracks from ‘Don’t Know What’s Cool Anymore’

Back Of My Bike

A cool, quirky, kitsch number that screams classic Alphabeat! Back Of My Back with it’s playful, rousing melody and poetic, romantic-like lyrics is as joyous as it is all encompassing! Complete with sing-along choruses and infectious vocoder sequences, the track gives us serious (and much appreciated) Charlie Puth vibes that we cannot get enough of.

The Answer

A gospel-tinged, unifying, freeing musical anthem, complete with soulful melodies, heavenly harmonies and emotional lyrics – The Answer is a touching pop song with a message that sees Alphabeat coming of age in oh so many ways… special kudos to Anders SG for delivering such an honest and powerful vocal.

Now You Know

A therapeutic, riotous pop banger from start to finish, slightly reminiscent of the style adopted by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl on the Christmas classic Fairytale of New York, thanks in part to its sharp, quick-witted lyrics and back and fourth conversational vocal between Stine and Anders SG – Now You Know is the perfect kiss off record, and anthem for all angry, heartbroken singletons around the world.

Sing A Song

The confessional and brutally honest Sing A Song tells the definite story of Alphabeat by the people who lived and breathed it; Alphabeat themselves. Emotional, self deprecating and raw, the track sees the band fondly embrace their history together with no regrets and no remorse. The perfect way to close one chapter of their lives and careers as they regroup together to begin another…

Alphabeat: A Voice For A Forgotten Generation

By coming back and returning to what they did as teens and young adults, wholeheartedly embracing who they are as individuals and as a band in 2019, creating music that is true and authentic to them, Alphabeat have ripped up the rulebook for how it is ‘expected’ people of a certain age are ‘supposed’ to behave – liberating themselves in the process, and ultimately giving a voice to a generation that is so often overlooked and forgotten, helping them to reclaim their sense of power and reminding them that life is to be lived, loved and enjoyed.

Well thought out, flawlessly executed and infectiously feel-good, Don’t Know What’s Cool Anymore is Alphabeat’s long awaited triumphant return to form!

Don’t Know What’s Cool Anymore by Alphabeat is out TODAY via Absolute Label Services & available to stream across all platforms.
